The Grain Pits
In 2013 during the works for the laying of natural gas pipelines, in the lower part of the Corso Garibaldi were found the ancient grain pits dating back to Norman times. They have a base diameter of about 10 meters and 50 centimeters, a depth of about 9 meters with an upper opening of about 1 meter and 60 centimeters. A trench is intact and easily accessible, while the other part of the vault ruined and is completely full of earth and debris. the grain pits were built to store grain, are found throughout Italy, over the centuries the shape given to it was not cylindrical, that a jar or flask, to that of a truncated cone or funnel.the pits of Castellammare you think back to 1300, back when it was built and the charger were in what was called "lu chianu di lu funnacu".Back to monuments →
